The centerpiece of this project is the custom mountain inlay. Instead of a typical deck, we meticulously designed and handcrafted a space that serves as a sculptural focal point. We chose premium TimberTech boards for this part of the project, a material known for its ease of use, durability, and resistance to decay. In the specific climate of McKinleyville and the surrounding area, using the right material is crucial. +To ensure this deck lasts a lifetime, we applied protective deck tape to every joist and treated every end-cut with waterproofing additives to prevent moisture infiltration.
Precision Engineering: Creating the "Sun and Mountain" motif required more than just carpentry; it required geometry. We utilized a protractor-layout system to ensure the sun rays radiated with perfect symmetry. To support the various board directions, we installed extensive internal blocking—ensuring every single board has a solid edge to land on with zero floating ends.
The Science of Heat-Bending
+ The "waves" and the 6' radius of the sun were achieved through a sophisticated double-heater and insulation system.
+ By "cooking" the TimberTech boards to a precise temperature, we were able to hand-form the composite material into a custom-built frame.
+ Once cooled, these boards retained their new shape, allowing for the seamless, flowing curves seen in the final product.
